The law firm of Laddey, Clark & Ryan LLP, which was named a WasteWise partner by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2008, has taken the designation seriously -- proving that going green is an achievable and cost effective goal in the work place.

Laddey, Clark & Ryan, with offices in Sparta and Denville reported their recycling and waste minimization activities to the EPA for the third year in a row. Over that time the firm increased their purchase of recycled products, decreased their usage of paper and paper products, decreased their purchase of non-recyclable plastic products, and increased their recycling of paper.

“What the staff have been able to achieve through effort and commitment to this initiative is remarkable,” says Robbin Dolan, Legal Administrator at Laddey, Clark & Ryan, who has spearheaded this effort. “It’s been amazing to see actual results both financially as well as environmentally.”

Laddey, Clark & Ryan has increased their recycling and waste prevention in 2009 by recycling 3 tons of paper, cardboard, plastic and computer equipment. In addition, Laddey, Clark & Ryan reduced waste by buying 2 tons of recycled material, such as paper, files, folders and envelopes for everyday use.

“We are focusing on maximizing our use of technology and preserving our resources," commented Tom Ryan, the firm's Managing Partner. “Being environmentally friendly is a sound business decision. We are saving money, which in turn saves our clients money.”

Simple steps made a big difference -- such as shredding of paper files and reducing paper purchases through increased scanning and decreased mailing. The firm has also decreased their solid waste by decreasing the use of plastic utensils, emailing more documents and the recycling of paper products. When paper products must be purchased, the firm has made a very conscious effort to buy recycled paper products whenever possible.

The EPA launched WasteWise in January 1994 as a voluntary partnership program designed to help organizations implement practical methods for reducing municipal solid waste. WasteWise focuses on three key elements of the program: waste reduction & prevention, recycling, and buying or manufacturing recycled content products. Organizations joining WasteWise agree to develop goals in these areas, track their results, and share their accomplishments with the program. The EPA commends partners in this program for their achievements.

Laddey, Clark & Ryan is the only law firm in Sussex County to officially go green by receiving this EPA designation.
