Court Upholds Record 1.25M Verdict in Sussex County

Sparta, NJ:  Honorable James A. Farber, J.S.C. upheld the court's $1.25 million recovery to Jill Yucius-Retz of Montague who was injured in a car crash in 2003. The defense had filed a motion in the Yucius v Venturi verdict to overturn or reduce the recovery, claiming that the verdict was excessive.

Yucius-Retz sustained multiple injuries when her vehicle was struck while entering her parents' driveway on Statesville Quarry Road in Lafayette. A Ford 250 pick-up, operated by Giovam Venturi of Lafayette, struck Yucius-Retz's vehicle on the passenger side of her Honda, resulting in both vehicles going off the road and landing in a ditch with Yucius-Retz's vehicle striking a tree.

As a result of the impact, Yucius-Retz suffered a bulging disk in her neck, a torn rotator cuff in her right shoulder, necessitating surgery, and a herniated disk in her lower back, which required a fusion surgery.

Yucius-Retz was represented by Andrew A. Fraser, Esq., a partner in the Sparta based law firm of Laddey Clark & Ryan, LLP, and Lauren D. McFadden, Esq., an associate with the firm.

This is the second million-dollar verdict for Fraser and McFadden in the past two years. Previously, he secured a $1.06 million verdict for Elaine Feinhals, who was the victim of a head-on collision, which left her with progressive impediments in her work and vocational activities. This later case (Feinhals v. Aumick), attracted state-wide attention. As a result of the landmark case, Fraser was invited to be a Guest Speaker at a Winter meeting of the prestigious A.T.L.A. (American Trial Lawyers Association). He is one of only a very few certified civil trial lawyers in Sussex County.

Laddey Clark & Ryan is headquartered at 60 Blue Heron Road, Sparta, NJ. To learn more about Fraser, McFadden or the firm and its diversified practice, log on to its web site: www.lcrlaw.com.

Not All Attorneys Play Golf

Sparta, NJ: Some might assume that all attorneys play golf; after all, isn't the golf course the site where many deals are made? Not so the case 'or course' for Lawrence J. Supp, Esq., Senior Associate at Laddey Clark & Ryan, Sparta, NJ.

For the past nine months, Supp has spent his Saturdays rehabilitating half of a century-old duplex home in Phillipsburg, in conjunction with the Warren County Habitat for Humanity (WCHFH). Habitat for Humanity provides housing opportunities to families who are facing a housing crisis and who are willing to assist in the construction of their home.

Supp, along with 10-20 volunteer crew members (both men and women) from a wide range of professions, refurbished the six-room (plus basement) home for a deserving family of five who moved in immediately after its dedication on July 29th. Most of the volunteers do not have construction/building experience, but Supp does hold an undergraduate degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The WCHFH chapter chose the new occupants and ultimately sells the property to the family at cost through a no-interest mortgage loan plus "sweat equity" which the family contributes to either their home or another family's project.

Supp "rocked" the project; or more accurately, sheet rocked the home, did some trim work and hung doors plus other fix up/replacement details for the half duplex, which also includes a brand new kitchen.

"It's a great sense of accomplishment to know that you are making a contribution to a good cause", says Supp who encourages people to volunteer for Habitat (www.warrenhabitat.org).

Supp joined the WCHFH last Fall, as did his colleague at Laddey Clark & Ryan, Angelo J. Bolcato, Esq., who serves on WCHFH's Board of Directors and on its Site Selection Committee. In fact, volunteering for WCHFH has also become a family affair, as Supp's wife, Shirley, volunteers in the Chapter's office.

He has been a long-time resident of Liberty Township residents and once had his own law practice with offices in Belvidere and Hackettstown, but opted to join Laddey Clark & Ryan so that he could focus more on his clients and the law rather than running a business. He specializes in Litigation, Civil and Criminal Trial Practice at Laddey Clark & Ryan.

Supp has also taught numerous legal courses over the years at Warren County Community College (WCCC); but this Fall, will be teaching Legal Research and Writing for WCCC over the Web. He earned his Juris Doctorate at Rutgers School of Law, Newark, NJ, and does admit to a game or two of golf a year.
